San Andrés Itzapa to Copán Ruinas (Honduras)
San Andrés Itzapa – Antigua Guatemala – Santa Maria de Jesús – Palín – San Vincente Pacaya – CA 1 (nth) – San José Pinula – Mataquescuintla – Miramundo – Jalapa – San Pedro Pinula – La Montaña – San Luis – Ipala – San Jose Arada – CA10(sth) – Vodo Hondo – CA11(east) – Jocotán – El Florido.
Thankfully most of the steeper ascents are paved, and those that aren’t are well-graded dirt. The descent from Santa Maria de Jesús to Palin was good fun on a mountain bike, but would be less fun the other way, as would the descent from La Montaña to San Luis.
The border crossing at El Florido was more ‘formal’ than Gracia a Dios had been, but no less easy. It’s open 24 hours, and has a lot of commercial truck throughput, but we were just waved through to the front of the queue. There was a US$ 3 entry fee for non-CA4 residents and we were given a stamp with 90 days despite having already been in Guatemala for 5-6 weeks of our allotted CA4 90 days.
