Tasmania: West Coast Remoteness

An email announced Scott’s return to Australia after not quite 2 years – he’s to be in Tasmania for a few short weeks – ‘can we do a trip?’.

This wasn’t to be a full-blown epic like last time, but something shorter.  I’d asked around when we were over in January and this all-too-brief foray was born.  Wild west coastal beach and dune riding from Granville Harbour to Arthur River.  Information is good, and Sarah and Bryn are helping with a ‘drop-off and meet’ to start things off.  In the end Scott and I ride together for a couple of days before we meet up with the others for some mix-and-match to finish things up.

Here are some pictures to tell the story.  Enjoy

Hobart doesn't auger well for good weather

Granville to Pieman Heads is a mixture of well-used 4WD track and beach - all with the ever-present pounding surf

After an hour of 'full company', Sarah and Bryn turn back leaving Scott and I time to reach Pieman Heads in time for our lift across. Doesn't stop him finding some play time.

  1. Wow, what an amazing place to ride and fantastic photos, Tom. I love seeing what you do with the m4/3 format. I’ve had a strong desire to visit Tassie since meeting my Tasmanian wife more than twenty years ago. Finally got there this year. We got to see a fair bit of the island, but not the West Coast. Looks like we have to come back. With bikes. Thanks for sharing.

    • Mikkel. I always leave Tasmania with a longer list of things to do than I arrived with – you’re not alone. I’m glad you like the photos – I’m pretty happy with the balance of weight, size and IQ that I get.
