Boranup: trying new systems and learning a new pace
Boranup. A land of towering white-trunked Karri and an equally white beach. Somehow we’ve had many thoughts about riding there but it’s not really ‘fit’ in previous spaces. With the need to test-ride the combination of toddler-carrying devices and packing methods we’ve got in mind for longer rides to come, we finally got ourselves out there.
As Bryn has grown, how we get around as a family has changed. It has been with a significant feeling of loss that we’ve moved him from steerer-mounted ‘front’ seat to a rack-mounted ‘rear’ seat. This trip was the first time we’ve use the Yepp-Maxi for more than day-to-day transport. It was also a chance to see if he would sleep as well in the ToutTerrain Singletrailer as he has always done in his Chariot CX1…The Margaret River region is defined by wine, but also by surfing with a multitude of very rideable 4WD tracks accessing the various breaks. There are quite a few unsung camping spots tooAs well as the more meandering 4WD tracks, there are also some pretty direct lines that are less topographically sensitive
Our improvised figure-8 takes us onto the beach a while north of Hamelin BayAll walk as we head towards firmer ridingSarah gets to ride without extra weight. The Singletrailer does surprisingly well with a 2.1″ wide tyre as long as a minimum speed is maintainedCamp is in amongst the dunes
The beach turns out to be well frequented by 4WDers – they seem to prefer the softer sand away from the water (thankfully)
The next morning our return route loops deeper into the forestDoing justice to the mesmerising envelopment of the Karri is trickyIn close-up ;-)
Route Notes
We followed a mixture of fire-road, beach and Cape-to-Cape track over around 60km taken at as leisurely pace as we could (1+ days). There are many more options for shorter and longer loops.
